Entries invited for Al-Thani Award for Photography 2011

Al-Thani Award for Photography, the international photo contest, invites entries for the year 2011.

Founded in 2000 as a regional photo contest with some hundred entries from mainly Arab and Middle East countries, the ‘Althani Award for Photography’ now has jumped to around 130,000 entries from 97 countries. Attractive Awards, a successful advertising strategy, a magnificent limited edition exhibition book and an experienced team of organizers made this competition of photo enthusiasts from around the globe such a tremendous success.

The opening of the competition for participants living in the GCC Countries has increased both the number of participants and quality of the pictures. It was announced for the first time in 2001, initiated Sheikh Saud Bin Mohammed Bin Ali Al-Thani, in cooperation with the Qatar Photographic Society. First of all participation was restricted to members of the society only, then, in the second year, the event was opened to all citizens of the State of Qatar. In 2003 it was announced for the first time as an international competition for the Gulf area, however, this time aimed at people living in countries in the Gulf. There were eight winners in each of these award events, and those in first place were able to take proud possession of a Limited Edition of 15 LEICA M6 TTL, orange colored, bearing the signature of Sheikh Saoud Al-Thani. The number of photographers participating in the competition has risen steadily since 2001.

To encourage photo lovers around the globe to enter their most innovative and best images, the Grant Prix currently is endowed with US$ 30,000.00, plus a special edition Leica M6 Camera. The Award for Middle East countries including Qatar is rewarding a total of US$ 25,000.00 for outstanding entries from this photographically strongly emerging region. In view of the important role played by panel of judges and contest chairman, a total of US$ 7,000 awards have been inaugurated. These special additional awards honor individual creativity.

Participants who are not fortunate enough to be accepted by the contest jury will receive their personal copies of the limited edition catalogue-book. This publication will set pace for other contests in both printing quality and artistic level. This not-for-sale book is reserved for contest participants and its supporters.

Further details and contest entry form can be downloaded from http://www.al-thaniaward.com/index.php. Entry closing date: 24th October 2011.
